Eşrefoğlu
Eşrefoğlu (d. 1469):
• Turkish poet and
mystic. He is also known as Eşrefi Rûmî or Eşrefoğlu Rûmî. Born in İznik.
• Abdullah, born in
İznik, was the father of Eşrefoğlu. He migrated from Egypt to Anatolia during
that time. His father's name is generally mentioned as "Seyyid Ahmed ül
Mısrî."
• The title
"Seyyid" in this name indicates that the person is descended from the
lineage of the last prophet of the Islamic faith, Muhammad.
Eşrefoğlu:
• Although his father
and grandfather were mystics and inclined towards Sufism, Eşrefoğlu received
more emphasis on acquiring knowledge.
• In his middle age,
around his forties according to some rumors, he concluded his academic
education and started working under a famous jurist of the time.
• Eventually, he set
aside his academic pursuits and embraced the Sufi way of life and perspective.
• His entry into
Sufism is often attributed to an incident involving a mad saint named Abdal
Mehmet who lived in Bursa during that period. However, the authenticity of this
story is debatable.
Eşrefoğlu:
• When Eşrefoğlu
wanted to embark on the Sufi path, he sought to become a disciple of Emîr
Sultan, a renowned saint in Bursa. However, Emir Sultan directed him to Hacı
Bayram Veli in Ankara.
• After staying for a
while in the dergah (Sufi lodge) of Hacı Bayram Veli, upon a recommendation, he
went to Hama to meet the Qadiri sheikh Şeyh Hüseyin-i Hamevî. He went there
with his family and stayed for some time.
• Finally, when Eşrefoğlu returned from Hama to İznik, he had become
