Karacaoğlan
• Karacaoğlan is a famous saz poet whose poems have been found
in anthologies written in the 17th century. • He is one of the most important
poets of the ashik tradition. There is no definitive information about his
life, but it is understood that he was born in the Cukurova-Toros Mountains
region in the 17th century and lived among the Turkmen tribes of the region. •
His poems were written in the everyday spoken language and syllabic meter of
Southeast Anatolia in the 17th century. He composed poems on nature, love, longing,
and homeland; during his lifetime, he gained great fame in the Ottoman lands.
His historical persona was quickly forgotten, and various legends emerged about
him, similar to Köroğlu and Aşık Kerem.
Karacaoğlan
• Some say that he was born in the village of Varsak (Farsak)
near Mount Kozan. According to another claim, Karacaoğlan's homeland is Gökçe
village in Feke, which is also the homeland of Varsak. The Barak Turkmen of
Gaziantep and the Çavuşlu Turkmen of Musabeyli in Kilis consider him from their
own tribes. Apart from these, he is considered to be from Aksaray, Elbistan,
Binboğa, Düziçi, Ermenek, or Mutlu. In fact, according to a legend published by
Vasili Radlof, he is from Belgrade and his real name is Simayil. Based on the
place names mentioned in his poems, customs and traditions, idioms and words
used, and the clothing of the depicted "beloved," it is understood
that he was born in Cukurova-Toroslar and lived among the Turkmen tribes of the
region.
Karacaoğlan
• According to the travel memoirs of Hoca Hamdi Efendi from
Akşehir in 1875, Karacaoğlan grew up as an orphan. He left his hometown at a
young age, possibly due to the fear of being conscripted for a lifetime like
his father or due to a falling out with the Kozanoğulları, who were feudal
lords in Çukurova at the time. There are poems indicating that he took both of
his sisters with him and traveled to Bursa and even Istanbul. It is believed
that he spent a significant part of his life in the Çukurova, Maraş, and
Gaziantep regions.
Karacaoğlan
• It is understood from his poems that he lived for a long time.
Based on some poems and sources, it is said that he died in 1679 or 1689. The
location of his grave is relative, just like his birthplace. Başdere, Sorgun,
Mut, Cezel, Düziçi, Tarsus, Zemzem Dağı, Hodu Yaylası are some of the places
where his grave is said to be located. In 2014, during the restoration of Hacı
Salih Mosque in Sarıveliler district of Karaman, a tombstone with the
inscription "Karacaoğlan, may his soul rest in peace" was found in
the courtyard, and it was claimed that this could be his grave.
