Köroğlu (16th century) is a symbol of struggle and freedom among the folk poets. He is a poet who took his name from Köroğlu, an ancient legendary hero whose birth and death dates are unknown. It is known that this poet participated in the Ottoman-Iran wars with the Ottoman army during the reign of Sultan Murad III (1574-1595) (1578-1584). Köroğlu, who climbed the mountains to avenge his father's death from Bolu Bey, and whose bravery and kindness turned into an epic, has merged with the rebellious Köroğlu in the public mind. In fact, it is a much older legend.
In his poems, bravery, friendship, love, and love for nature are narrated in an enthusiastic tone with a very simple language. These poems are interspersed among the narrative stories told by storytelling minstrels. These stories, numbering 24, prepared the emergence of a Köroğlu epic that spread to the Turkic world. Some storytellers have also adapted what they wrote in books into films.
Köroğlu is actually an ancient soldier and later became a mountain bandit. He took this name (possibly as a pen name) from a hero in ancient Turkish epics. His real name is Ruşen. Köroğlu represents a brave, just, and devout ideal human profile. It largely overlaps with the "Koroğlu Legend" ("Kor" means blind in Azerbaijani language), which is very common in Azerbaijan.
According to this epic, Köroğlu's real name is Ruşen Ali. His father, Yusuf, is the stable master of Bolu Bey. Bolu Bey, who is fond of horses, sends his stable master Yusuf to buy a special breed of horse, but he doesn't like the foal brought by Yusuf and blinds him. Yusuf takes the foal and his son and leaves the homeland. Ruşen Ali raises the foal in a dark stable as described by his father. After a certain time, the foal grows wings and becomes a unique steed. Yusuf and Ruşen Ali go to the Aras River, where they wait for three magical foams to descend from Bingöl. When Yusuf drinks the foams, he will regain his sight, rejuvenate, and take revenge on Bolu Bey. However, Ruşen Ali drinks the foams himself and gives his father water without foam. Yusuf is saddened by this but also happy because his son will become a brave warrior who will take revenge.
One of these three magical foams grants Köroğlu eternal life, one grants heroism, and one grants poetry. After Yusuf advises his son to take his revenge, he dies. Ruşen Ali goes up to the mountains with his black horse. He gains fame as Köroğlu and starts living like a feudal lord, winning every battle; he distributes what he takes from merchants, lords, and pashas to the poor. When the pierced iron (gun) is invented and the old traditions of bravery are disrupted, he advises his comrades to disperse and "keep it a secret," and he disappears.
