Öksüz Dede
• It is believed that
Öksüz Dede grew up in the Tuna regions and lived during the reign of Sultan
Murad III. He was a Janissary poet who wrote poems about heroism. The period in
which he lived is known through the kasidas he wrote when Iranian Prince Haydar
Mirza was held hostage after the Ottoman-Iranian wars between 1557 and 1590. He
was recruited into the Janissary corps as a devshirme.
