Dadaloğlu

Dadaloğlu

Dadaloğlu (real name: Veli) is a folk poet who opposed the settlement policies of the Ottoman Empire towards Anatolian Turkmen. He is known to have been born in the Tomarza district of Kayseri in the late 18th century and died in the mid-19th century. He lived a semi-nomadic life between the Cukurova and Binboğa mountains. There is no precise information about his birth and death dates.

Period

There were two different types of literature in the Ottoman Empire: folk literature and court literature. Court literature, known as Divan literature, was written in a mixture of Ottoman Turkish, Persian, and Arabic words. This language was not used in daily conversations and was not understandable to the majority of the population. On the other hand, folk literature was created using the colloquial language spoken by the people and mostly consisted of oral literary works. The most common form of folk literature is the poetry genre called "koşma." The sung version of koşma with a specific melody is called "varsağı."

Dadaloğlu lived in the mountainous regions of southern Anatolia (Nur Mountains and possibly the Taurus Mountains). His other name was Veli, which was a pen name used by poets. He belonged to the Avşar tribe of the Oghuz people. The Ottoman Empire's efforts to settle nomadic Turkmen tribes such as Avşar, Karsantı (Aladağ), Sırkıntı, Bozdoğan, Kırıntı, Berber, and Menemenci led to resistance, rebellions, and conflicts. Dadaloğlu's poems can be considered as the voice and oral history of Turkmen tribes who did not want to settle. Due to these objections, the Ottoman Empire granted agricultural lands to the Avşars. However, Dadaloğlu still preferred the traditional nomadic lifestyle of his tribe members and fought against the Ottoman Empire.

Dadaloğlu reflected his struggle in his poems, capturing the emotions and reactions of his people. He said the following words:

"If it is the decree of the sultan, the mountains are ours!"

At the end of the struggle, Dadaloğlu and the Avşar and Cerit Turkmen people with him mostly settled in the Central Anatolia Region. Dadaloğlu died in the Kaman district of Kırşehir. His grave is located in the Ziyaret Tepe neighborhood of Kaman, overlooking the district.
