Sıtkı Baba
Sıtkı Baba
Sıtkı Baba, whose real name is Zeynel Abidin, was born in 1865 in the village of Yenice, connected to Tarsus in Mersin. His father's name is Mehmet, and his mother's name is Eşeli. Sıtkı's family is descended from the Dede Garkın tribe and lineage of the Oğuz Bozok branch. Sıtkı's father passed away when he was still a child, leaving him orphaned. Sıtkı and his brother learned to read and write in the village madrasah. It is said that Sıtkı started reciting poetry at the age of six under the pseudonym "Pervane." At the age of 12, despite his mother's objections, he ran away from home driven by his love for Hacıbektaş Veli Dergâh, where he had heard of his fame. It is understood that Sıtkı joined the Hacıbektaş Dergâh and became a disciple of the postnişin Feyzullah Efendi when he was 12 years old in 1876.
During World War I, Sıtkı Baba fought as an honorary captain in the volunteer mujahideen battalion formed by Alevi communities at the request of Cemalettin Çelebi for the defense of the homeland. Sıtkı Baba stated in his poems that Agahî Baba and Yediharf also joined this battalion.
Sıtkı Baba, who emphasized love, tolerance, unity, togetherness, and brotherhood in his poems, did not hesitate to address various historical events, including the War of Independence. Sıtkı Baba had over eight hundred poems in various manuscripts and written works. He wrote poems titled "Hürriyet ve Müsavat Destanı" (Epic of Freedom and Equality) during the Second Constitutional Era and "Sulh Destanı" (Peace Epic) after the War of Independence. Sıtkı Baba had a strong poetic technique, carefully selecting his words in his poems. He wrote his poems in both syllabic meter and aruz meter.
Sıtkı Baba's poems have a beauty within simplicity. He does not need foreign words. His language is the language of the people, and the subjects he addresses are the people's troubles, joys, and lives. In short, his poems are "pure examples of our traditional folk poetry."
