Teslim Abdal

Teslim Abdal is a notable figure among Alevi-Bektashi poets who lived in different places and times. His tomb can be found in various locations such as Denizli, Çorum, Malatya, and Thrace. The most well-known Teslim Abdal lived in the 17th century, and his real name was Mehmed. He held a prominent position as a Bektashi leader during the reign of Sultan Murad IV and was recognized as the spiritual father of the Janissary Corps, having participated in the Baghdad campaign. Among Alevi-Bektashi poets, he occupies a distinguished place (Kaya 2002). Unfortunately, detailed information about the life of Teslim Abdal, believed to have lived in the Çorum region in the 17th century, is scarce.

One piece of information about the identity of this poet can be found in the register titled "Inspection of Bektashi Tekkes," housed in the Sivas Museum. This register is an official document compiled later, under the order of Sultan Mahmud II, after the dissolution of the Janissary Corps and the closure of Bektashi tekkes.

Teslim Abdal has composed numerous poems known as "nefes," but only about seventy of them have been collected. In his village, his descendants have a mindset of keeping his works hidden, not sharing them with others. As a result, many of his poems have not been widely obtained.

Among the works of Teslim Abdal, his musical compositions have left a stronger imprint in the collective memory of the people. He is considered one of the greatest Alevi poets of the 17th century. His way of life can be inferred from his own poems and the works of other poets. According to this information, Teslim Abdal held a high position as a revered spiritual guide within the order. While not as revered as Pir Sultan Abdal, Teslim Abdal's poems are prominently featured in the repertoire of Alevi-Bektashis.

Do not rely on worldly wealth.

The state of this world is like this,

Falsehood and goodness pass just like that.

As you speak, speak with vastness,

Be vast, oh heart, be vast.
